So you want to make a cup of rooibos and you want to know the optimal boil time or “steeping time”. Well, that depends largely on if you are drinking it for health reasons or simply for taste.
For taste you’ll have to be the judge (their your taste buds after all). Begin with 5 to 8 minutes time, and experiment from there.
If you are drinking it for health reasons, research has shown that letting rooibos tea steep for 10 minutes or longer results in a remarkably higher antioxidant levels than if you boil for less than five minutes. Makes sense, right? Unlike so many other teas, the longer steep time will not result in increased bitterness, only more flavor and more nutrients!
Bring water to a rolling boil. If using a tea pot rinse it out and warm it up first with a bit of the boiling water. Then place 1 teaspoon of tea for each cup into the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot, cover and let steep for 10 minutes or longer. Remember the longer the steeping time the more antioxidants you will receive.
“Drink up! To your health!”
