Back in 1998 our brother purchased “Ribbok Fontein” (Buck Fountain) Farm situated high atop a plateau in the Maskam Mountain Range in the Western Cape Provence of South Africa. The flat top mountain with its shiny, copper colored edge is truly an impressive sight. Nearby there are caves with bushman stick paintings on the walls dating back 600 to 1000 years which gives testament to the regions rich heritage.
The farm rest miles and miles away from any kind of industry with the nearest signs of civilization being a small, farming town located at the base of the mountain called Vanrhynsdorp. The town rests on the edge of the Namaqualand Wilderness famous for its springtime display of over 4,000 species of natural wildflowers.
There are no “roads” per say leading to the farm. Access is quite difficult and requires a 4×4 vehicle and a skilled driver. All this isolation translates into one thing: Purity. The clean, pollution free environment is ideal for producing “Exceeding Fine Quality Rooibos Tea”. ANd that is precisely what our brother decided to cultivate.
The region with its high altitude, hot, arid climate and deep sandy soil is ideal for growing Aspalathus Linearis (rooibos) AKA Red Bush Tea. In fact, the conditions are so precise that attempts to grow this plant elsewhere in the world have failed. We think that’s a good thing.
Additionally, the plant has a natural helper, keeping it healthy and pest free. Her name is Ladybird (Americans know her as “Ladybug”) and she enables us to produce a truly organically grown product making our rooibos tea as natural as natural can be.
